Empower Child Domestic Workers Through Education

PROJECT TITLE: EDUCATE 200 WAR AND HIV/AIDS ORPHANED UGANDAN GIRLS 

REPORT PERIOD: QUARTERLY REPORT FOR  MONTHS JULY, AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER 2016

Platform for labour action through the GlobalGiving Donors is providing support for a better future to 48 girls currently leaving in Lira district. The project provides support to war and HIV/AIDS affected and infected orphaned with school fees, counseling and scholastic materials such as books, pens, pencils, rulers, rubbers and school uniform, Toilet paper and mathematic set.

Through the home monitoring visit and school monitoring visit, PLA staff  offer home visits where all these beneficiaries are staying, to offer their support and  monitor the  conditions of the children while at home with their guardians during holidays, their living condition and providing psychological support.

During the quarter a number of activities were carried out that included payment of fees for the whole term, counseling, school and home visits to the beneficiaries, Holiday event was also organized and activities like storytelling, cricket and traditional dance competition were undertaken among the beneficiaries. The children were further provided with Lunch on that day. Below is the summary of the activities during the quarter July to September 2016 .

48 girls affected and infected by HIV/AIDS or war have continued to attend the different schools within lira district . These schools include; Ireda primary school, V.H primary school, Lango Quran Primary School, primary school, Railways primary school and Ojwina primary school, Otim Tom Primary School, Adyel Primary School, Sir Samuel Joe Primary School and  Lira Primary School

ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT UNDER THIS PROJECT

The school fees for the 48 girls has been paid to the different schools totaling to two million seven hundred fifty seven thousand six hundred shilling only (UGX 2,757,600/=).

MONITORING VISITS AT HOME

All the 48 Children were offered with counseling services during the reporting period to the children among the issues children were counseled about included their academic performance, their situation at home and at school and some also their illness. They were encouraged to never lose hope.

MONITORING VISITS AT SCHOOLS

Monitoring visits to the schools where beneficiaries were placed within Lira Municipality were carried out to check on their academic performances; the schools included  these include; Elia Olet Primary School, Boke P.7, Lango Koran P.7 school and King James SS, Lira P.7, V.H P.7, Railways P.7, Ireda P.7, Lira Police Primary School.

REPORT CARDS FOR SECOND TERM 2016

All beneficiaries were able to share their report cards with the PLA offices and majority had performed well of the 48 only 8 were below average. They attributed their good performance on the better conditions they are currently enjoying with books and the meals provided for at their schools. The eight children those performance was not exception.

The children reported have challnges of having their guardians taking away their scholastic materials and give to their biological children.  Auma report "The global giving people have changed my life, please tell them thank you for me, my own challenge is whenever books, pens and pads are given to me, my guardians taken them away and gives them to her own children." She sadly remarked. PLA staff have since visited the family and shared the need for Auma to have support from home to enable her have a conductive study environment.

HOLIDAYS ACTIVITIES

On the 23^rd September 2016, all beneficiaries from Ireda P/S, Sir Samuel Joe Primary School, Lango Quran Primary School, Ojwina Primary School, V.H Primary School, Otim Tom primary School, Adyel Primary School, Lira Police Primary School and Railways Primary School had holiday’s parties at PLA Lira Field Office

All beneficiaries participated in the activities which included traditional dance, Cricket competition, storytelling, sharing holiday’s life experiences among themselves, sharing their home situation with Administrative Volunteer and one of the  Human Right Advocates . They also shared their report cards and letter to parents  with the PLA administration and this enabled the PLA team to understand what the school needs are  and how the child was performing at school.

The Holiday event enabled the children to interact with one another and share experiences and forge relationship among themselves this has enriched their lives as they have networks.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the children are happy and have been able to go through the early education at primary level and the challenges come in when PLA doesnt continue with the child  secondary education Level; There is a need to ensure funds are available to enable he children peform and study beyond form seven.
