Rosette`s case story
Rosette is 13 year old who was brought to work as a domestic worker in February 2017 in Kireka - Wakiso District. Following the separation of Rosette’s parents, she was left in the care of her paternal Aunt at a very tender age of 7 years. The Aunt using the merger resources struggled and educated Rosette until completion of her primary education. Rosette’s Aunty could no longer support her at secondly level. With no hope of any other good Samaritan to come her recue but with only a zeal to further her education, Rosette offered to work for her Paternal Uncle as a domestic worker. In February 2017, Rosette was brought her Uncle to Kireka a suburb in Wakiso district to work as a domestic worker at an agreed monthly salary of Ugx. 50,000/= (Uganda Shillings; Fifty Thousand only).
Rosette’s Aunt agreed with the Uncle to keep all the salary until December 2017 to use to enroll her in the Universal Secondary School. On reaching in Kampala, Rosette was mistreated at the hands of her Uncle who was also the employer. She succumbed to constant beating and verbal abuses as denial of food.
On one fateful day of 15th November 2017, Rosette was beaten on allegations of intentionally breaking a flask. Rosette disappeared from home and she was found wondering in Kirinya area near Kireka by a good Samaritan who took her to the Kirinya police station. PLA was called by the Child and Family Protection Officer to represent Rosette who employer/ Uncle was uncooperative. PLA lawyers intervened in the matter by convening mediation with the employer and as a result Ugx. 602,000/= was recovered for and on behalf of Rosette as her outstanding wages for the time she had worked. In addition the employer/ Uncle paid compensation of Ugx. 200,000/= for assaulting Rosette and Repatriation fee of Ugx. 70,000/= back to Bushenyi district in Nyabiri village in Rwentura sub county. PLA worked with the Aunt to enroll Rosette for a tailoring course using part of the recovered money and the remaining money she bought a second hand tailoring machine.
