FAME was busy this summer working to STEMulate™ Change for at-risk youth!
STEMulate™ Change is a nationally recognized STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education program which engages at-risk youth in problem-based curricula designed to ignite interest in STEM learning at school and build capabilities to pursue STEM-related careers. Our 4 and 8 week curricula are uniquely designed around Global & American STEM icons (minorities and/or women). Youth can more readily relate to a role model of the same race or gender.
This summer, over 300 youth at eight different community centers in Delaware were engaged in 36 hours of fun, hands-on STEM education. The summer curriculum was based on Dr. Yoky Matsuoka, a female neuro-robotics scientist who developed the modern robotic hand. Students learned how robotic and prosthetic technology can enhance the mobility of people with physical disabilities. Student groups utilized the knowledge and skills they learned in the program, as well as their imagination, to design and build prosthetic legs using duct tape, sponges, plungers, plastic tubing, PVC pipes, mailing tubes, and other supplies.
FAME looks forward to a busy fall and winter operating this program as an afterschool program at Title I schools and community centers in Delaware.
