For the 4th consecutive year, the Manengouba Foundation has collaborated with the Collège Socka Bongue, our local partner school in Cameroon.
On Friday, Feb. 22, 2019, the partnership hosted its first annual STEM Education through Basketball Signing Day. The event, which was held in conjunction with the school’s annual fair, was held for free to all 130 students (ages 12-18) currently enrolled at the Collège Socka Bongue.
The event kicked off at 11 a.m. with a soccer game between students and teachers. After a tied score at the end, both teams went to penalty kicks, landing the students to a 5-3 victory over their teachers. Several activities followed the kickoff such as short comedy scene, Karaoke, best poem competition and a fashion show. Student also displayed their projects demonstrating the great work they have been engaged in over the last few weeks.
The focus of this year’s fair was to enroll additional participants into the STEM Education through Basketball program, an effective, hands-on and fun approach to teaching STEM. All participants were given free sandwiches, drinks, tee shirt and winning prizes sponsored by the Manengouba Foundation.
Below is a list of basketball game lessons that involve STEM that students participated and won prizes for during the Signing Day fair.
Bounce and Energy:
Question: How high will a basketball bounce when dropped from shoulder height?
Everyone who answered “b” won a prize. Participants learned that when a ball is dropped to the ground, it comes back up almost to the point it was dropped from, but not quite. The important thing participants learned is that energy changes.
After several games, the feedbacks received from participants have left us galvanized and more focused than ever. We successfully enrolled the first 45 students into the STEM Education through Basketball program.
Chaïna, our STEM Ambassador, reported that one of her favoritie activies of the day was the Q&A game. She said: “Now, I understand that the game of basketball is actually math and science in motion, and also geometry, physics, algebra and even chemistry come alive on the court!”
Throughout the Spring of 2019, participants of our STEM Education through Basketball project will be engaged in over 52 hours, per student, of STEM-based curriculum. We also plan to renovate a basketball court at our partner school to allow all participants to learn and enjoy the game of basketball.
