Excitement builds for upcoming Startup Day

Destiny making music
Destiny making music

We have a date! Saturday, August 2 is startup day for our teens. The theme is 'Gaining STEAM' (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math). Teens are planning activity stations and drafting event logos. The winning design will be put on all marketing materials, including the t-shirts and drawstring bags for each event participant.

STEM Academy activities are in progress where members are learning to refurbish computers in Cisco IT Essentials classes, creating apps with AppInventor, developing games with Scratch and Kodu, and using mobile technology to create digital music and flipbooks. To contribute to the art component of STEAM, teens at all of our clubs have completed Digital Arts Festival projects in graphic design and animation based on a theme to prevent bullying. So creative - we expect a few of them to win regional awards. The teens are planning a gallery to showcase their artwork at startup day.

As school activities and sports dominate afterschool hours, we are maximizing the time that we get by running simultaneous activities with multiple staff. Members get multiple choices and we keep more of them engaged to keep their interest. A good example is Destiny. Destiny saw Julius creating apps then testing on the handheld mobile devices. She had to try it. During the process of creating her first app, Destiny discovered the music making app on the handheld device. After a quick tutorial, she was creating her first song adding bass, drums, guitar and piano. A short discussion on song construction then Destiny was rearranging tracks, removing instruments and changing tempo to craft a tune. When staff offered to help, she exclaimed with full gestures, "I got this!" And she did. Members heard the music and told her how much they liked it. Her song will be used in a film project.

Thank you for supporting our members like Destiny. They are developing STEM and leadership skills every day.
