Painting & Decorating update

By Triona | Fundraising Team

Thank you for generously supporting St Mungo’s Painting & Decorating training programme with a donation!

This Programme is going from strength to strength, successfully supporting homeless people in their recovery by providing a positive environment in which to learn new and useful skills and work towards employment and independent living; as well as generating income for the Programme, through a social enterprise arm.

Thanks to your support we can offer our homeless clients the chance to:

  • have some structure in their life
  • gain new work and life skills
  • build confidence and self-esteem
  • feel proud of their achievements
  • get support with literacy
  • gain a qualification

Steve the Trainer worked with 33 clients over the last year. 7 of these have gone on to volunteer with the social enterprise arm of the project, ReVive, completing work projects to bring in money to the project.

ReVive volunteers earn credits for their work.  These credits can be used for further education, training or to purchase their own tools and equipment to start work on their own.

Steve works closely with the St Mungo’s Employment Team to help his trainees and ReVive volunteers move into college and/or work.  During the last year one trainee went on to complete an advanced marbling course at an external specialist company as he was particularly talented at this technique.  While furthering this expertise he was inspired to apply to college and will be working to earn an NVC in Painting and Decorating.  With the qualification he received at our training programme he can skip the First Level and join at Level 2.

Steve: "Our main aim is to give our clients more than enough training to enable them to move into paid work, employment or on to further training. The course has had a very positive effect on the lives of all our trainees. We work hard to keep them motivated and engaged and recommend them for other training programmes which helps to keep them inspired. We found that trainees who have moved into their own flats have gone on to use their new skills to decorate their homes."
