Progress at St Benedict's School of Hope

Planning a School of Hope takes time, often long before we are able to raise any money for one. A local community will usually approach us asking for support, we then meet with them and discuss the criteria of setting up a School of Hope.

The building that will be used for a SoH must be situated in the heart of each community within the informal slum settlement and be based in a rent and charge-free space. We insist that it must have space for a library with a secure, lockable bookcase for the books, a toilet facility on hand, have a water point or access to water and have at least two trusted volunteer supervisors who are happy to take charge for evening, weekend and holiday sessions.

The community is aware that they take ownership of the School of Hope after the third year. Each School of Hope committee is trained and made aware of the importance of self-sustainability. Self-sustainability is achieved through various means. In some schools, a small charge of 20 Kenyan shillings per month is levied for each pupil (less than 1p per day). Other Schools of Hope rent out their space during the day to community small enterprise groups who create items such as jewellery, home utensils, soap, disinfectants and shampoo to help fund the School of Hope.

These pictures are from St Benedict's School of Hope, the committee have been meeting and have the space ready. We just need to do some fundraising now!

We have already raised £1762  since we started the GlobalGiving accelerator and that is all down to our amazing donors. Great news is that we have achieved one of our aims of getting over 40 donors and we are still working on raising enough to stay with Global Giving permanently, just £2207 to go!
