Project Report: Strengthening Organ Donation and Transplantation in Sri Lanka
Building professional capacity and supporting sustainable transplant development
Dear friends and supporters,
Thank you for your continued support of our work to strengthen organ donation and transplantation systems. Your contribution helps DTI Foundation continue supporting healthcare professionals and institutions that are working to improve access to life-saving transplantation.
In Sri Lanka, patients with end-stage organ failure continue to face important challenges, and the development of strong donation and transplantation systems is essential to offer new hope to patients and families. Achieving this requires trained professionals, institutional commitment, clear clinical pathways, and long-term collaboration between local and international partners.
During this reporting period, DTI Foundation has continued its collaboration with healthcare professionals and institutions in Sri Lanka, with the aim of supporting knowledge transfer and strengthening local capacity in organ donation and transplantation. This work has included technical exchange, professional training, and continued dialogue with local teams involved in donation, transplantation, and related clinical areas.
A recent collaboration mission to Sri Lanka allowed DTI experts to meet with local healthcare teams, visit key hospitals, and participate in educational and professional activities focused on organ donation and transplantation. These exchanges helped identify opportunities to further strengthen deceased donation, end-of-life care, family approach, and tissue banking practices.
The objective of this project is to contribute to the gradual development of a stronger and more sustainable donation and transplantation framework in Sri Lanka. Training and knowledge transfer are essential to help healthcare professionals identify potential donors, improve donor management, communicate effectively with families, and coordinate the different steps of the donation and transplantation process.
The expected impact goes beyond individual training. Professionals who receive specialized education and technical support can become local references, share their knowledge with colleagues, and help strengthen practices within their hospitals and professional networks. This multiplier effect is central to DTI Foundation’s mission: saving lives through education, cooperation, and sustainable capacity building.
Progress in organ donation and transplantation requires time, continuity, and strong collaboration. Each activity carried out with Sri Lankan partners represents an important step toward improving access to transplantation and offering better opportunities to patients with organ failure.
We are deeply grateful to all donors and partners who make this work possible. Your support allows us to continue accompanying countries like Sri Lanka in their efforts to improve donation and transplantation systems and build a future where more patients can benefit from life-saving transplantation.
With gratitude,
DTI Foundation
