First visits to Katewadi

By Alyssa Dilly | Programs Coordinator

Project: Sponsoring Katewadi, new project village of 1,000

Project update: First Visits to Katewadi – due June 2, 2014

CRHP's Mobile Health Team (MHT) has begun to meet with villagers in Katewadi village. The focus and goal of these meetings is threefold: to build rapport and trust with community members by learning from and listening to them; to introduce CRHP's programs and initiatives that will be adopted by Katewadi over time; to identify potential leaders in the communities – people who show commitment towards developing their village.

A first important meeting was focused on performing a transect walk through the community. MHT members Jayesh Kamble and Popat Powar conducted this walk, aiming to gain understanding of the economic and religious divisions in the community, as well as current agricultural practices and waste management techniques. "We see good things," says Jayesh, reflecting on the walk. "The people in Katewadi are aware of green energy, which is great. Some houses even have solar panels. Women are eager to come together to form a Self-Help Group."

A second, equally vital meeting brought together the mayor of Katewadi, village committee members, village farmers, and CRHP's MHT. The mayor is very supportive and encouraging of the work that CRHP has done and continues to do; this support is essential for the success of further projects. Men have expressed interest in learning about watershed management; it is very evident that the drought and the atypical rains we had in the past months have had a big effect on their livelihoods.

Community members of Katewadi have been invited to CRHP's campus to observe programs and activities – such as weekly Village Health Worker trainings and Adolescent Girls Program sessions – and meet staff members who will also contribute to Katewadi's progression as a project village.

Looking to the future, the MHT will continue to meet with villagers and slowly organize women’s Self Help Groups and men’s Farmers’ Clubs. Communication is strong, and continuing to grow and deepen. Soon, a Village Health Worker will be selected, and will then begin her health worker training on campus. We hope that this VHW has been selected by the next project update so CRHP’s donors will be able to meet this wonderful and inspiring woman!
