Kolhewadi Update: Focusing on the Environment

The emphasis in Kolhewadi over the past three months has been placed on environmental issues such as tree planting, securing safe drinking water, and wastewater management. Tree farming can increase income generation while helping to maintain a healthy environment. Discussion and planning among the Women’s Groups and other community members to plant local fruit trees like tamarind, custard apple, and mango is taking place now. Jayesh, one of our Senior Trainers, has met with the community several times regarding safe drinking water. Currently several hand pumps with safe drinking water exist throughout the village; however, safe wastewater management practices have not been implemented yet. Soak pits are a simple method of filtering wastewater using all locally available materials. The Mobile Health Team will be working with the community over the next few months to build soak pits throughout the village.

The Adolescent Girls Program has already worked with unmarried girls ages 12-18 in Kolhewadi, and the boys from Kolhewadi are good candidates for the next round of the Adolescent Boys Program. Several Women’s and Men’s Groups have already been initiated, and regular meetings will begin in the next few months. CRHP staff members are working with Vadana, the VHW for Kolhewadi, to start a Self-Help Group within the lower caste community of her village.

Rekha, the Village Health Worker from Kolhewadi’s neighboring village Rajuree, has been mentoring Vadana since she was selected. She has taught Vadana how to check blood pressure, test urine for excess sugar and to monitor existing patient’s sugar levels, and urine tests that check for pregnancy and eclampsia within a pregnant woman. Socially, Rekha has been working with Vadana on the most effective methods for organizing her community.
