Help to Purchase School Uniforms..

By Ilakkiaarasi | Fundrising Executive

Indian Association for the Blind (lAB), based in South India is a well-known non-profit organization working to provide education, employment, training and rehabilitation for the visually challenged from rural areas. Late Mr S.M.A.Jinnah, the visually challenged activist and a group of like-minded visually challenged people founded IAB in 1985.

Since its inception, IAB has educated and rehabilitated more than 23700 visually challenged children and youths mainly from rural areas. The dress code is a primary means of helping students learn a skill, which is required for success in getting and keeping employment linked to attire. School uniforms may improve attendance and discipline. A school uniform teaches students to dress smartly and take pride in their appearance.

Perhaps most importantly, a uniform means students don't have to worry about peer pressure when it comes to their clothes. When everyone is dressed the same, worrying about what you look like isn't so important.

A dress code promotes a more serious school atmosphere which emphasizes academics and promotes good behaviour. Dress codes have proven to increase student achievement by encouraging students to concentrate more on their studies and less on their wardrobe. A de-emphasis on clothing can also save money, as there will be less pressure to keep up with expensive trends and fashions.

Dress codes in school settings reduce social conflict and peer pressure that may be associated with appearance. Studies indicate that a school dress code can reduce the prevalence of certain behaviours which are often expressed through wardrobes such as violence or promiscuity. As opposed to uniforms, dress codes still allow students to wear what they want which leaves students with a sense of choice and expression.
