From Hardship to Hope: Thavry’s Journey of Resilience and Transformation
Thavry’s life is a powerful story of transformation. Now a 20-year-old third-year Mathematics student at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, she has overcome daunting challenges that once threatened to derail her dreams. Born into a struggling family in the rural village of Taneng, Sangkae Commune, Rumduol District, Svay Rieng Province, Thavory’s early years were marked by hardship and uncertainty.
Her mother shared, "I am overjoyed to see the remarkable transformation in my daughter. She was once a quiet and reserved girl, but now she confidently speaks up, sharing her plans and the things she enjoys doing. Moreover, her academic performance has greatly improved. Without SCO’s support, it would have been extremely difficult for my family, especially for my daughter, to continue her education. As a jobless person, with my factory having closed and no income, we would have struggled immensely. I am truly grateful to SCO for providing food assistance and supporting my daughter’s education during these challenging times."
Her family’s financial difficulties eventually forced them to move to Phnom Penh in search of better opportunities. For Thavry, the transition was anything but easy. While attending school in the bustling city, she faced immense pressure to leave her studies and contribute financially to her family. Yet, her parents’ unwavering belief in education became her anchor. “They refused to let me give up,” Thavory recalls. “Even when it seemed impossible, they encouraged me to stay in school.”
Despite their encouragement, the odds remained stacked against her. In secondary school, the need for supplementary tutoring in subjects like Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry created yet another obstacle. Without the financial means to access these classes, Thavory struggled to keep up academically. The gap in her education widened, and her confidence faltered.
In 2019, just as Thavry was nearing her breaking point, a life-changing opportunity arose. She joined the Sunshine Cambodian Organization (SCO), which became a turning point in her story. SCO stepped in with critical support, covering her school fees for supplementary and English classes, and providing school uniforms, stationery, and bags. For the first time, Thavry could attend supplementary classes in her core subjects. “It was like a door opened,” she says. “I could finally build the foundation I needed to succeed.”
With SCO’s support, Thavry excelled in her grade 9 exams, achieving results she once thought impossible. Beyond academics, SCO helped her fulfill long-held dreams. She learned English, a skill she had yearned for since childhood, and picked up Chinese and computer literacy as well. These new abilities expanded her horizons and ignited her confidence.
Thavry’s growth extended beyond her studies. She transformed as a person, finding her voice and her courage. “I used to be shy and afraid to speak,” she shares. “But through the activities and guidance at SCO, I learned to take initiative and overcome my fears.” She also developed strong interpersonal skills, learning to communicate effectively and build positive relationships with others.
By participating in the youth club each month, Thavry gained valuable lessons that helped her develop self-confidence and courage, while also fostering strong relationships with her peers in the club. Through her involvement in youth activities, she emerged as a proactive leader. Her transformation has been remarkable; she is now a courageous young woman who confidently leads group discussions, shares her insights in the children’s club, and takes charge of youth group activities. Thavry has become a catalyst for change within both her school and community.
Today, Thavry is not only pursuing her degree but also working as a part-time teacher—a role that allows her to give back while securing her path forward. She stands as a testament to resilience and the transformative power of education. “I am deeply grateful to SCO, the teachers (she referred to SCO's staff), and the sponsors who supported me when I had no hope,” she reflects. “Without them, I would not be where I am today.”
Thavry’s story is a beacon of hope for children facing similar struggles. It is a reminder that with determination, support, and faith, even the most challenging circumstances can be overcome.
“To all those who believed in me, thank you,” she says with heartfelt emotion. “May God bless and protect you always. Your kindness has changed my life, and I will strive to honor it in everything I do.”
