"Now, I am much braver!" Pisey said with a big smile. "I have friends who love to learn with me. Before, I was shy and scared. But now, I feel strong and confident! If I hadn’t joined the SCO project, I think I would still be afraid."
Pich Pisey is a 10-year-old girl in Grade 6, living in Samaky 2, Sangkat Tropang Krasang, Khan Por Sen Chey, Phnom Penh. She comes from a large family with seven siblings—four sisters and three brothers. Her mother, Prak Pov, is a 43-year-old housewife who previously worked as a fish seller in front of a factory. Her father, San Wichay, is 35 and works as a security guard to support the family.
Pisey’s family has faced severe financial struggles. They often lacked enough money for food and education, and their small, rented room was overcrowded. Pisey dreamed of learning English, but their financial situation made it impossible. She lacked a proper school uniform and supplies and feared she might have to drop out. Her parents’ relationship was strained, and they often scolded their children rather than guiding them. Her father frequently resorted to violence at home, making Pisey feel unsafe and withdrawn.
However, life has taken a positive turn for Pisey and her family. Her parents have made significant progress in communication and have stopped resorting to violence, thanks to their participation in the mother’s and father’s club organized by SCO. With guidance from SCO’s staff, especially Chenda, they have learned better parenting skills. Pisey has also benefited from the children’s club, where she has gained knowledge about children’s rights, family relationships, future planning, and hygiene. Additionally, her family has started saving money for emergencies, and her parents now fully support her education, encouraging her to attend both Khmer and English schools regularly.
Before, Pisey felt unhappy at home, which made her dislike school. She lacked understanding of cleanliness, respect for elders, and proper behavior. She was too afraid to speak up, fearing punishment, and lacked confidence, often choosing silence over participation.
Today, Pisey has undergone a remarkable transformation. She now understands the importance of morality, respect, and hygiene. She takes care of herself by maintaining cleanliness, trimming her nails, and preparing for school and the children’s club. Her behavior has significantly improved—she respects her parents and teachers and has built stronger relationships with others. Encouraged by SCO’s staff, she has developed confidence, made friends, and spoken up for herself. Pisey no longer resents her mother for past hardships and now understands the challenges of raising many children. She also helps care for her younger siblings.
Pisey enjoys the children’s club, where she learns while having fun. She has grown more confident and now expresses her thoughts to her parents about her education and rights. She is grateful for the opportunity to continue her studies in both Khmer and English schools, just like her peers.
Pisey’s father proudly acknowledges her growth. "Pisey has changed a lot since joining the organization. She speaks up more and is much braver now. She is more focused on her studies and never misses school unless she is sick. She also helps with housework and takes care of her siblings but still finds time to study."
Chenda, an SCO staff member, has also noticed her progress. "I have seen an incredible transformation in Pisey. She actively participates in the children’s club, answering questions and sharing her ideas. Her courage and determination have grown so much that she now dreams of becoming a Khmer school teacher one day."
Pisey is deeply grateful for the support she has received. "Thank you so much for choosing me to be part of the SCO project! I’ve learned so much, especially from the children’s club. It has helped me understand everything better and given me confidence, knowledge, and hope for a brighter future."
