Project Summary Sunshine Cambodia (SC) works in five urban poor communities in Phnom Penh. SC’s project supports 350 poor children and youth, especially girls, to have self-confidence, to enjoy and to exercise their rights, to access education, to receive knowledge and skills. They are also prevented and protected from any kind of abuse, violence, trafficking, and exploitation. Through this project children and youth are equipped to be active actors and leaders for their family and community. We are encouraged to many boys, girls, youth have shown they are improving. Actually, many of them have got knowledge and skills. Some are studying at university and some have jobs. SC’s project also works with their parents for improving their full responsibilities for their family living conditions and their children’s studies. Through our project, some families managed to run a small business and have jobs, while some of them bought some necessary stuff for their family’s needs. Additionally, they also show that they care for their children regarding study and health. The support that brings smile to their children and hope to poor family “Before, my son dropped out of this course. Then, I explained and encouraged him again and again. As a result, he decided to restart this course. He almost finishes the course now, I think. I am very happy about this,” Makara said happily. Makara, Sochea’s father, 50, lives in Tropaing Anchanh village. He rents a shop for his business. Sunshine Cambodia supports his family and one of his sons, Socheat. His family received start-up capital from Sunshine Cambodia’s project to improve their business. His job is to repair motorbike and to sell motorbike accessories, gasoline, and soft drink. His business has grown from time to time. He can make a sufficient income for his family's daily expenses and his children’s study. “I will try my best to run my business, even though it may face some challenges. I want to improve my family living standards. I hope I can save some money for my family and for reserving for any challenging in my business and family,” said Makara. His wife stopped working at the factory. They have started working together in their shop now. This brings them a good relationship. They also have time to take care of their children and follow up on their studies. They always encourage their children to study hard for their future. Mr. Makara sent his son to study mechanism at PSE. Now he almost finishes that course. “Honestly, I am tired because I have to stay in my shop day and night. Sometimes, it was a hot day and made me feel tired. However, I am very happy because I have a good income for supporting my family, especially, my children. I also can repay to the bank. I would like to express my gratitude to Sunshine Cambodia and donors who support my family and children. Your support has brought hope to my family and smile to my children,” Makara said. During our visit, Ly, one of his sons, who is Socheat’s brother said that “I am happy that my father always encourages and motivated me to study. Once, I quitted my study at PSE. From that moment, my parents always explained to me about my future and some challenges in life. Then, I decided to restart my course again. Now, I almost finish that course. I am very happy because I have a good study result now”.
