The Reality of the Orange Orchards For the past academic year, APCYF has been a sanctuary for over 120 preschool children, providing care and education entirely free of charge. These children are the sons and daughters of migrant laborers working in the vast orange orchards. Without our center, these children would spend their days in the fields, exposed to toxic agricultural chemicals and stripped of any chance at an education. For them, learning to speak, read, and write Thai isn't just a school subject—it is a fundamental survival tool to claim their rights and build a future in Thailand.

However, even within our "safe haven," the shadows of poverty and fear loom large. The story of Jam Lu is a heart-wrenching reminder of how fragile these lives truly are.

When Fear is Deadlier Than Fever

In January, Jam Lu, a bright 5-year-old girl in our program, fell ill with a high fever. For most parents, a hospital visit is the logical next step. But for Jam Lu’s parents—undocumented migrants living in extreme poverty—the hospital is a place of terror. They feared the costs they couldn't pay and the legal consequences of their status.

Driven by desperate love but lacking medical knowledge, they attempted to treat her with over-the-counter medicine. The result was a nightmare: Jam Lu suffered an accidental overdose. She became unresponsive, slipping into a deep, terrifying sleep that she could not be woken from.

A Race Against Time

When Jam Lu was rushed to our APCYF center, our staff recognized the emergency immediately and coordinated her urgent transfer to the hospital. She remained under intensive care for 7 days as doctors fought to stabilize her and clear the toxins from her system.

The Price of a Life The medical bill totaled over 25,000 THB ($700 USD)—an impossible sum for a family earning meager daily wages.

“If we hadn’t intervened, Jam Lu might never have woken up.” To ensure she received full treatment, APCYF advanced the entire cost and is currently committed to an installment plan with the hospital. We could not let a child’s life be the price of poverty.

Jam Lu is Just the Beginning

It is vital to understand that Jam Lu is just one small example. She represents hundreds, even thousands, of children in this region who live in the shadows.

• They are at risk: Every day they are not in our center, they are in the orchards, breathing in chemicals.
• They are invisible: Without legal documents, a simple fever can become a death sentence because of the "wall of cost" and the "wall of fear."
