By Laura Brown de Rodriguez | Director, Therapies Unite
We wanted to take you behind the scenes of our aquatic therapy program and shine a spotlight on the incredible people who make these life-changing sessions happen.
Welcoming Jeremy to the Team
In March, we were delighted to welcome Jeremy, the newest member of our therapy team. Jeremy first joined us as a wheelchair technician in our posture clinic service. After seeing the impact that Therapies Unite has on the children and families we support, he felt inspired to get more involved in our projects.
Since then, he has joined our Aquatic Therapy Program and has been shadowing Nadia (our lead physiotherapist), learning directly from her, as well as working alongside Mariano and Laura to support families in the pool. Jeremy’s motivation and compassion have already made a big impression on parents and children alike.
Jeremy shared:
“Being in the water with the children and their parents has shown me how powerful therapy can be. I’m learning so much every week, and I feel proud to be part of a team that brings so much joy as well as progress.”
We are so happy to have Jeremy with us and excited that, with more staff, we can now offer much-needed aquatic therapy to even more children and adults in Puerto Vallarta.
A Day in the Life of a Session
Every session begins with Nadia carefully preparing the pool area. She checks the equipment, makes sure the water is safe, and sets up everything families will need. Once the children and adults arrive, she visits each family/person individually—guiding on which exercises to focus on, helping them adapt movements, and encouraging progress. She may also complete an initial assessment for a new attendee.
Meanwhile, Jeremy and the rest of the team are in the water too, supporting children and adults, building their confidence, and making therapy feel like play.
Aquatic therapy offers so many benefits:
For children with limited physical movement, the buoyancy of the water reduces pressure on joints, making it easier to move and practice exercises that would be difficult on land.
For children with autism or sensory processing differences, the calming and stimulating properties of water can help with regulation, focus, and engagement.
For all participants, therapy in the water builds strength, balance, and coordination—while also creating joy, confidence, and connection.
Sessions often finish with a fun group game—like Marco Polo—which brings laughter, smiles, and a sense of community. For many children, it’s the highlight of their week.
And it’s not just the children who benefit. Parents also find comfort and strength in the program. Mums and dads share experiences, support one another, and build lasting friendships—creating a community where no one feels alone on their journey.
Did You Know?
Something you may not realise is that the pool does not have a hoist system to get children/adults with disabilities in and out of the water. This means our team must carefully plan, assess, and support each family to ensure safety and comfort. It takes teamwork, creativity, and sometimes even adapting equipment so every child can take part.
Thank You!
Your donations make this possible—ensuring we have the staff, training, and resources needed to deliver safe, fun, and effective aquatic therapy. We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated during our July Bonus Day—together you raised an incredible £1,486! This means so much to us. Please continue to support our work if you can by setting up a regular monthly donation.
Coming Up Next
In our next report, we’ll dive deeper into the science behind aquatic therapy and hear from experts in the field. Don’t forget to check our website and social channels (give us a like and share!) for updates on everything else we’ve been up to.
