For CFYDDI Home learning Initiative for rural learners who can’t access radio and Television study lessons, we have combined sensitizing programs for parents and girls on how to end and prevent the ever increasing teenage pregenancies, sexual abuse among school going girls during the COVID-19 lock down. the lockdown` exposed teenagers to the open loosely guided public where they can easily be tempted and convinced by opportunistic men and boys with promises of giving them materials things like phones, classic fashion clothes and money. This kind of situation has accelerated teenage unwanted pregnancies rates in the communities across the country Uganda, this has also been escalated by other factors like rape, defilement and as a result increase in forced early marriages for financial gains and survival where parents marry off their daughters for as less as $1, beside others girls are being harassed sexually by their brothers, step fathers and close relatives in this period of covid-19 whom they are staying with at home, causing the trend of teenage pregnancy to increase rapidly, triggering confusion as homes that are ment to safe guard children are turning out to be unsafe as it was clearly stated by the first lady and minister of education. this remains a despair to the parents and the entire country. This has been reported in the media where 100 girls were reportedly raped in Tororo district another 60 learners between 13 years and 15 years were reported from Luuka and kalilo district were reported to be impregnated during the lockdown. Therefore we had to work out a plan with our community girls and the parents on how to protect the underage girls, the adolescents and the school girls to ensure they remain safe while at home.
On the other hand, Its now clear that when continuing learners return to school next year they will be examined basing on the learning materials published in newspapers and lessons conducted on radio and television during the lockdown where schools remain closed. But the question is can every rural Ugandan child have access to radio or Television set? Is every rural village connected to the national electricity grid? The answer is a big NO? To you all our Supporters here your support prevails to support such dis-advantaged learners in this time of COVID-19. Our team of teachers and other volunteers ensured that parents who cannot totally support their children and even have access to learning materials, we ensured that with your support we enabled continuity of learning with home support learning by providing learning materials and support parents with skills and techniques to implement home schooling which involved grouping children from the same neighborhood, identifying able support learners and providing call contacts in case of need for further support. Our team continues to visit the group learning center’s suggested by parents to support where they experience any challenges.
Your continued support ensures that we reach out to rural community flocks in this time of COVID-19 with learning materials and skills to safeguard a girl child from people that want to deprive them of their future by impregnanting them at a young age, safeguarding young girls from rape and subsquently preventing the young girls from HIV Virus from those who are taking advantage of the prevailing economic hardships worsened by COVID-19
