Bharathi Seva Mandali Trust (R) Karkala started Special School in the academic year 2004-05 for rehabilitation of mentally and physically challenged children and named it as “Chethana Special School”. It gives us immense pleasure that our special school has successfully completed 17 years with the co-operation of valued supporters
The Chethana Special School initially started with 16 mentally and physically challenged children with the whole hearted support of our well wishers. Since 2011 our special school is having its own building in half an acre of land near Sri. Krishna Kshethra, Anekere, Karkala donated by Borkatte Hegde family. With the support of valued donors our school is now having 85 physically and mentally challenged children by providing free education. About 30 children are provided hostel facility. At present there are 10 specially trained teaching staff, Physiotherapist and Speech Therapist 1each and 10 non teaching staff members working for the school.
There are classes for the students under Pre-primary and Secondary divisions. After completion of Secondary division eligible students are given special training for appearing SSLC examination. We are pleased to inform that some of the students have already passed SSLC examination. Apart from this students who have completed 24 years of age are given necessary training in Yoga, Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, Music, Dance, Yakshagana, Physical education, Computer class, Tailoring class and Vocational training (Preparation of cloth bags, paper bags, artificial flowers, yakshagana face masks etc.)
Our school is spending about $ 85,000 every year for meeting various type of expenses such as providing education, food, transport, uniform, medical facility at free of cost and also for disbursement of salary to the staff members and to meet other maintenance expenditure. The receipt of grant from the Government Department is very meagre and major portion of the amount is to be received from the well wishers and donors.

1. Full Fledged New Physiotherapy Unit ”T Ramalaxmi Sudhakar Prabhu”.
Our proposed new projects:
For uplifting these special children to the main stream of the society in better way we propose the following new projects to be initiated.
1. Compound Wall and Play ground :
Our school building is situated adjacent to state highway bypass road. We propose to construct compound wall to the school building to ensure safety for special children and also a play ground for physical training and encourage need of sports. The estimated cost of project is about Rs.9,00,000.00
2. New Vocational Training Centre:
We have decided to start vocational training unit for preparing paper and cloth bags, handicrafts, tailoring and skill training to our special children and marketing for the product. The estimated cost of project is about Rs. 5,00,000.00
3. Mobile Unit for awareness programme:
A Mobile unit for giving awareness programme for identifying the disabilities and giving treatment for the same in rural areas. Rs. 4,00,000.00
4. A Unit of early intervention:
A unit of early intervention and early stimulation by identifying disability in small children and providing treatment in early stage. Rs. 2,50,000.00

For providing uniform we are spending $ 1170 per year for 85 students.
Average food expenses comes $ 53 per day for 85 students.
Average monthly expenses comes to $ 95 per child.
Average food expenses comes to $ 320 per year per child.
