Special Olympics Malaysia hosted the Special Olympics Malaysia 6th National Games from 24–26 April 2026, with Bintulu, Sarawak, proudly hosting the Games for the first time. The Games have successfully concluded, bringing together over 400 athletes with intellectual disabilities, 100 unified partners, 100 coaches & delegates from across the country in a powerful celebration of sport and inclusion.
The Games featured eight sports: Athletics, Aquatics, Bocce, Bowling, Badminton, Basketball, Table Tennis, and Unified Football 5-A-Side. Over the course of the Games, athletes demonstrated remarkable resilience, determination, and sportsmanship. Through every event and interaction, the Games highlighted the transformative power of sport in breaking down barriers, fostering friendships, and creating meaningful opportunities for individuals of all abilities. The National Games served as a platform to advance inclusive sports development in Malaysia. By creating spaces where athletes with and without intellectual disabilities compete side by side, the Games continue to challenge stigma, promote acceptance, and strengthen communities. The success of the Games was made possible through the collective efforts of volunteers, partners, families, and supporters whose commitment continues to expand opportunities for persons with intellectual disabilities nationwide.
The Healthy Athletes Screening programme, a comprehensive initiative designed to support the overall health and well-being of athletes. The programme featured multiple disciplines, including FUNfitness (physiotherapy/ occupational therapy), Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Foundation Opening Eyes® (optometrics), Special Smiles (dental), Strong Minds (mental health) and Health Promotion (general health), Fit Feet (Podiatry), Healthy Hearing (Audiology) - each addressing different aspects of physical and mental health. The programme also focused on empowering athletes with knowledge and practical tools to maintain healthier lifestyles.
The success of the Healthy Athletes programme was made possible through strong collaboration with medical and community partners, including Hospital Bintulu, SEGi College, and the Lions Foundation. Healthcare professionals, lecturers, students, and volunteers worked hand in hand to deliver high-quality care, creating a supportive and inclusive environment where athletes felt valued and understood.
As the Games conclude, their impact extends far beyond the field of play—empowering athletes, raising awareness on health and inclusion, and reinforcing a shared vision of a more inclusive Malaysia through sport.
