Five years ago, Andrea was surprised to find some furry drifters on her property in Yamhill, OR. She took several to her local vet to be spayed and neutered. Unfortunately, there was one mama who she couldn't catch. As one cat became 10, then 20, then 30....well, it became overwhelming for her as she couldn't afford to pay for the surgeries for all these cats.
Andrea was relieved to learn about the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon's no-cost spay/neuter services for feral cats. It was her chance to do right by the kitties who had taken shelter on her property. With trapping and transporting assistance from a volunteer, 47 cats from Andrea's colony were spayed/neutered with their first effort.
But they didn't stop there. Andrea has three children who know almost every one of the cats and where they eat. They feed the cats in several outbuildings and have humane traps set in each place. They've found the eartips on the recently spayed/neutered cats to be incredibly helpful for keeping track of which cats still needed to be trapped. In the end, they brought 101 cats to be spayed/neutered.
Helping this extraordinarily large colony has touched everyone at FCCO - staff and volunteers - deeply, as we realize the community effort that went into improving the lives of each one of these cats.
The out-of-control breeding cycle has ended for this colony.
