Helping Cats & Caregivers for 30 Years

This year FCCO celebrates our 30th Anniversary!

As college students, Ellie and Peter Shelburne rescued more than 100 cats and kittens from the streets of New Haven, CT. After Ellie graduated from veterinary school, she wanted to do something tangible to prevent cats from ever living outside of loving homes. In Portland she joined a group of veterinarians who determined that a trap-neuter-return (TNR) program was the only effective way to reduce feral cat populations in the area. In March 1995 these veterinarians founded the Feral Cat Coalition of Portland (FCCP).

FCCP started with $1,000 from private donors, 15 surgical packs, and an anesthesia machine donated from the local animal control. At the first clinic, held June 25, 1995, they spayed/neutered 16 cats in an all-day effort.

Thirty years later we have helped 140,000 cats and more than 35,000 caregivers, and continue to do this powered by volunteers and donors who believe in spay/neuter. While our clinics are much larger and more efficient, with a capacity to help 70 or more cats per clinic, we are truly humbled by the foresight of our founders to create an organization that has made such an impact in so many lives. Thank you for being an important part of our history and all the cats helped!
