When Kim returned to SPARC several months ago, she wasn't simply coming back to a program—she was returning to a community where she is known, valued, and celebrated.
Life had changed. After changes in her housing situation, Kim found herself once again looking for a place where she could connect with others and continue to grow. We were thrilled to welcome her home.
Kim's story is unique. As one of our older participants, she grew up during a time when many of today's disability services simply did not exist. She did not benefit from the opportunities, inclusive education, or community supports available to younger generations. Yet through determination and resilience, she developed remarkable independence. She is thoughtful, kind, and an exceptional self-advocate.
Still, like so many adults with severe and multiple disabilities, there was one thing she wanted most:
Friendship.
Not acquaintances. Not people who simply occupy the same room.
Real friendships.
The kind built through shared experiences, laughter, trust, and belonging.
Over the past several months, our team has intentionally focused on helping Kim achieve that goal. We have taken the time to learn what brings her joy, identify participants with shared interests, create opportunities for meaningful interaction, and encourage conversations that grow naturally into lasting relationships.
Because friendships don't happen by accident.
They grow through consistency. Through shared experiences. Through being seen, understood, and accepted exactly as you are.
Today, we're seeing that transformation unfold.
Kim eagerly joins group activities, actively engages with her peers, and has become increasingly comfortable reaching out to others. Her confidence continues to grow as she discovers that she belongs—not simply as a participant, but as an important member of the SPARC family.
Perhaps nowhere is that growth more evident than in her excitement for SPARC's upcoming Fashion Show.
Kim has enthusiastically committed to walking the runway.
For many people, walking in a fashion show may seem like a small thing.
For Kim, it represents something much larger.
It is confidence.
It is courage.
It is joy.
It is standing proudly in front of friends who will be cheering her on—not because of her disability, but because she is their friend.
This is the kind of transformation that donor support makes possible.
At SPARC, we don't simply provide activities to fill a day. We create opportunities for adults with severe and multiple disabilities to build confidence, discover their strengths, and develop authentic relationships that enrich their lives.
We believe every person deserves more than services.
They deserve belonging.
And thanks to generous supporters like you, individuals like Kim are discovering that they truly have a place where they are welcomed, celebrated, and loved.
You Can Help Create More Stories Like Kim's
Every day, adults with severe and multiple disabilities face profound social isolation. Your support helps change that by creating opportunities for friendship, confidence, growth, and community.
A gift to SPARC provides far more than a day program—it creates a place where people discover they belong.
Together, we can ensure that more individuals like Kim have the opportunity to build meaningful friendships, celebrate their unique gifts, and live lives filled with connection, purpose, and joy.
Please consider making a gift today. Because everyone deserves a place to belong.
