Bocce is a fun group activity that dates back to the Roman Empire. You’ve probably played it yourself or seen others playing in a backyard or park. SPARC club members want to play too, and since we believe in 100% inclusion, we’re looking to purchase adapted bocce equipment.
How does that happen? Isn’t bocce a game where people bowl small balls to another?
Sure, but that’s what makes inclusion so much fun. In adapted bocce, a player in a wheelchair who doesn’t have complete control of their limbs can cradle a ball with their chin and release it on a special ramp that allows the ball to reach the jack.
A lot of work and some expense goes into adapting activities so that anyone can participate.
Adapting enrichment activities so that adults with disabilities can participate is the core concept behind our clubhouse programs.
Think about watching someone take a picture using their head to press a large shutter button attached to a camera.
Think about art sessions where non-verbal people can express themselves in a variety of media in ways that assure people that their communication simply takes another form.
Think about adapted yoga, adapted zumba, and all the other activities SPARC members participate in during the week because there are few or no other community resources open to them.
In the last two weeks, we’ve also enjoyed activities centered around cooking, science, health and hygiene, trivia games, adapted Scrabble, music, dance, relay races, and word games.
Living a life like yours takes a little extra work and a little extra money. That’s where you come in. We’re willing to do the work. Would you please help with a donation today? We promise you pictures of great bocce matches and an amazing feeling from knowing that you helped dozens of people be included in activities when they are normally excluded.
