SPARC was founded in 2006 by Donna Goldbranson in response to a lack of options for adults with severe disabilities.
Our local county governments spend billions on K-12 special education programs, but young adults "fall off the cliff" when they graduate. At a recent public meeting, one of our original four club members shared his story. He said:
"When I graduated fromohigh school opportunities for young adults with physical disabilities were too few. There was a Life Program, college wasn't an option. Day programs did not have a high population of DD waiver folks or supporting people with high physical needs but not intellectual disabilities. Supported employment opportunities were difficult because of the one-on-one support we needed to be successful.
That was the point in time where I started asking Therapeutic Recreation and our county leaders “how could I age out of life at 22”? I went from a vibrant high school career to not fitting anywhere. "
SPARC was the solution becuase we put the "can" in "can't!"
At SPARC our day programs provide Continued Education, Advocacy and skills to Navigate the community successfully.
Participating in SPARC costs $9,000 per year to attend five days a week. We have nine members who rely on donations to attend for free.
Your support provides social group, peer support, travel, sports, art and music therapy, chair yoga, zumba and much more!
Please help us ensure that young adults who rely on our programs to live the life we all want to lead are able to despite their funding streams.
