Dear All:
Great news! We are moving along - and almost there - with the first-ever computer lab at a super-excited school of 500+ students and 20 staff in deeply rural South Africa.
Laying a rock-solid foundation is vital to the lab’s effectiveness, maintenance, and longevity; so, while we are all eager to get this UP and running, we do not rush. We tick all the boxes. We want to make sure that the lab and all the human beings are 100% ready-to-roll before the students step in for the first time.
All the “physical” items are in place.
1) security inside and outside the lab
2) a bank safe for laptop storage
3) 30 work-stations: desks and chairs
4) electrical outlets for each work-station
5) a server
6) 30 laptops and sleeves
7) academic software that parallels the government curriculum
The Computer Lab Coordinator is now busy doing the following:
1) devising a lab timetable for all students in Grades 4 - 7,
2) setting up the academic software on all 30 laptops,
3) registering learners on the software, which tracks individual performance,
4) making signs that detail lab rules about behavior, food, drink, and laptop usage, and
5) allowing time for the Computer Lab Coordinator to learn the ins-and-outs of the computer lab and the software, while getting private lessons with her counterpart in a nearby school, whose lab we also funded and who is familiar with all-things-lab.
As soon as the students enter the lab and open UP this amazing new world, we will come back to you with videos, photos, and all sorts of joy!
