In Rumbek East County, where the floods have washed away homes, schools, and livelihoods since 2024, children remain the most vulnerable. In Rumbek East County families lost their home and farmland to the rising waters. Before our intervention, Rumbek East County had experienced situation where many children have dropped out of school and often went hungry. Through the “Restoring Hope to Children Affected by Floods” project, There is now lack of meals, safe space to learn, and psychosocial support for school children. Their smiles and determination and aspirations for children to return to school have faded off.
Since the last update, SSGID has reached a number of children and caregivers with emergency food rations, NFI support kits, food items in Rumbek East. We have also mobilized local volunteers to conduct awareness sessions on hygiene and child protection, ensuring children are safer from disease and exploitation during this crisis.
While our progress is meaningful, the needs remain staggering. As of 17 September, floods continue to devastate over 379,000 people across five states, including Lake State. Sadly, due to limited funding, SSGID has not been able to mount a full-scale rapid response. In the face of this challenge, we have launched a new campaign calling on individual well-wishers, charitable institutions, and government organizations to step forward.
We appeal directly to our donors on the GlobalGiving platform: your support can make the difference between despair and dignity. Every contribution helps restore life-saving assistance food, safe water, shelter, and education to children and families still trapped by floodwaters. Together, we can ensure hope rises again in Rumbek East county in South Sudan.
