Restoring Hope: SSGID’s Lifeline to Flood Victims in Rumbek East County, Lake State, South Sudan

A Story of Resilience, Hope, and Community Strength

South Sudan Grassroots Initiative for Development (SSGID) has successfully distributed essential relief items to over 200 flood victims in Thon Aduel village, Aduel Payam, Rumbek East County, Lakes State. This humanitarian intervention aims to alleviate the suffering of the most vulnerable, particularly women and children, who have been severely affected by recent flooding in the area.

In the heart of Thon Aduel village, Aduel Payam, Rumbek East County, Lakes State, where floodwaters have mercilessly swallowed homes and farmlands, a glimmer of hope emerged. The South Sudan Grassroots Initiative for Development (SSGID) stepped forward to stand with the most vulnerable mothers, children, and families who have lost everything.

With tears of joy and gratitude, over 200 flood victims gathered as SSGID delivered lifesaving relief items worth 10,000 USD donated by GlobalGiving , including mosquito nets, blankets, mats, maize flour, saucepans, caps, and salt. The distribution was not just about aid; it was about dignity, survival, and rekindling hope for those who have endured unimaginable hardships.

Among those who received help was Aluel Machol Machiek, a single mother of two, who had been struggling to keep her children safe from the harsh conditions. With a heartfelt smile and a sigh of relief, she shared her experience:

"Before today, my children and I were sleeping on the cold, bare ground, exposed to mosquitoes and sickness. I had nothing to cover them with, no food to feed them. But today, thanks to SSGID, I finally have something to protect my children. I feel like I have been given a second chance to rebuild our lives."

The majority of the beneficiaries were women, making up 90% of those affected, a testament to the vulnerability of mothers and children in times of disaster.

A Community in Crisis: Local Leaders Call for More Support

The relief effort was witnessed by local leaders, including the Acting Commissioner of Rumbek East County, Hon. James Kany Makuei. With a solemn but hopeful voice, he addressed the gathering, acknowledging the dire needs of the affected families:

"Thon Aduel village has suffered greatly thousands of people were displaced from may  2024  to  today, and many have not yet returned to their homes. These families are struggling with no shelter, no food, and no way to recover on their own. This support from SSGID is a lifeline, but we need more partners to come forward. We must act together to restore dignity and hope to our people.”
