The French Red Cross mobilized in Nice after the attack
A man driving a truck smashed into the crowd attending the festivities of the national holiday of July 14th in Nice on the Promenade des Anglais, killing 84 people and injuring many other.
The French Red Cross quickly intervened to organize the assistance and support of victims and their relatives. Two shelters were set up to take care of the latter. The French Red Cross has also been asked to reinforce the Crisis committee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development set up to help victims.
Floods in France
A particularly significant rainfall event hit France in May 2016, causing flooding and exceptional rise in the level of rivers, forcing thousands of people to evacuate their homes. Nearly 300 volunteers from the French Red Cross mobilized to welcome, support and assist victims in thirteen French departments. They actively participated in setting up emergency shelters, in the reception of hundreds of highway motorists blocked on the road, and in helping the victims to clean their homes devastated by water and mud.
The French Red Cross launches an improved version of its First Aid mobile app
The free mobile application enables anyone to learn or refresh its knowledge on first aid, to be prepared for disasters and to learn with games. The app is made for all the people wanting know how to react in crisis situations and has been completely redesigned to offer more content and is displayed more clearly and intuitively. Since it’s been launched in 2011, the first version of the app has already been downloaded by nearly 600,000 users.
Bring water and sustainable sanitation in Niger
The French Red Cross and the Nigerian Red Cross have set up a program in 2012 to allow the population to access drinking water and sanitation in the Zinder region. The program contributes to improve access to water, basic sanitation and hygiene practices in Niger, a country located in the Sahel region. The French Red Cross and the Nigerian Red Cross constructed or rehabilitated 48 water points, 3000 household latrines, and 150 blocks of school latrines. They also raised awareness of hygiene and sanitation among the whole local population.
Find one’s lost family through the website “Trace the face”
The French Red Cross allows people who have been separated because of armed conflict, disaster or migration, to find themselves again, thanks to a global research network. The International Movement of the Red Cross set up the website "Trace the face", which is a database collecting photos of people looking for relatives. The website is translated in four languages (English, French, Spanish and Arabic), and gathers a thousand photos online. Twenty-eight countries currently participate in refugees’ research in Europe, in order to allow them to regain contact with their families.
