Dear partners and donors,
Warm greetings on behalf of Poder y Luz Maya NGO. Below, we share the progress and results of the Solar Schools for Social Justice project (66143), an initiative that continues to transform rural and indigenous communities in the last mile of Guatemala.
1. Executive Summary
The Solar Schools for Social Justice project continues to close the energy inequality gap in territories historically excluded from access to reliable electricity. Our intervention goes beyond the technical installation of photovoltaic solar systems; we implement a comprehensive model of community energy sovereignty, where the population is the protagonist of the management, sustainability, and expansion of its own energy system.
Solar energy thus becomes an enabling platform for education, social organization, and economic mobility.
2. Sustainability Milestone: The Monte María El Rosario Community, in the Municipality of Uspantán, Department of El Quiché, currently represents our most recent success story in community sustainability and technological appropriation.
Key achievements:
a) Self-sufficient Financial Management.
Through their fundraising plan, they successfully raised the necessary funds to purchase and replace the batteries for the solar system installed at the Educational Center, ensuring the continued operation of the energy storage system. This investment was financed with their own resources, strengthening community co-responsibility.
b) System Capacity Expansion.
In addition to replacing critical components, the community generated additional funds to expand the installed capacity, increasing the energy resilience of their Educational Center.
c) Transformative Educational Impact.
Thanks to continuous access to electricity, students were able to use digital tools, computers, and extend their learning days. Particularly significant, we report that several young people from the community graduated from middle school, an achievement directly linked to the availability of reliable energy for their academic development.
This result demonstrates that energy is not only a basic service but also a structural enabler of social mobility and professional development in rural contexts.
3. Impact Analysis: A Replicable and Sustainable Model
We have reaffirmed that the Poder y Luz Maya NGO model is scalable and sustainable when based on three strategic pillars:
Community Ownership
The solar system is perceived as a collective asset. This ensures preventive maintenance, community monitoring, and planning for equipment replacement.
Organization and Transparency
The ability to raise funds in a context of scarce resources demonstrates strong local leadership and transparent internal management mechanisms.
Energy Social Justice
By reducing dependence on external assistance for repairs and improvements, the community breaks cycles of technological exclusion and strengthens its autonomy.
4. Conclusion
The experience in Monte María El Rosario reaffirms that social justice begins with access to energy, but is consolidated when the community acquires the capacity for management, planning, and expansion.
Today, the solar centers in the last mile of Guatemala are more than just energy infrastructure:
they are hubs for community organization, academic training, and the generation of opportunities.
These young graduates are the clearest evidence that when energy arrives, the future arrives too.
We deeply appreciate your trust and continued support. Every donation invested not only installs solar panels; it builds educational pathways, strengthens local leadership, and dignifies entire communities.
With gratitude and commitment,
Luis Cahuex
