Four rural health facilities in Kibaale District, Uganda, serve communities where maternity care is constrained by limited and unreliable electricity. During nighttime deliveries and emergencies, inadequate lighting and power can make it harder for health workers to provide timely and safe maternal and newborn care. These facilities serve communities totaling more than 50,000 people who depend on accessible rural health services.
Rural Smiles Foundation will equip selected underserved rural maternity facilities with appropriately sized solar power systems, prioritizing facilities with significant maternal-health needs and limited reliable electricity. The project will also train health workers in basic system operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance to support long-term functionality.
The project will strengthen reliable maternal and newborn health services in underserved rural communities by reducing dependence on unstable electricity sources. Solar power will enable safer nighttime care, improve health-facility resilience, and provide a sustainable energy solution that can support maternity services for years.
