By Michael H. Varhola | President, Solar Empowerment Initiative
Dear Friends,
I am pleased to report that we were finally able to place an order for 21 cases of solar lanterns thanks to you our kind donors. We were able to augment the donations we received through GlobalGiving with money received from outside donors. This provided enough funds to make this order possible.
As many of you know Sri Lanka is going through some very tough times now. Power outages are frequent in those villages that are fortunate enough to be connected to the grid, and the value of the currency has plummeted. As is always the case, the burden falls most heavily on those least able to bear it, and those will be the primary target of these lanterns.
World Vision Lanka continues to be our partner in this endeavor. Michelle Croos, our POC at WVL is very devoted to this project and often distributes the lantern personally to school children in the villages lacking reliable electricity, which, unfortuanately is the majority of villages in the country.
I hope by the time of my next report the lanterns will have been received and distrubuted and I will be able to show you pictures of happy school children with lanterns in hand.
