Lila, 8 years old, is from a family of indigenous tribe in the Philippines called Mangyan. She is one of the beneficiaries who received a solar lamp in Barangay Panantayan, Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro. According to her, having a solar lamp in their house makes her proud because even though they are "living in the forest," she can "do things like what other children living in the city can do at night." She mentioned that because she likes to play and spend time with her family and study at night, the solar lamp she received through the donations to Global Peace Foundation's All Lights Village Program helps her to make those things possible.
Her mother also expressed that aside from being able to save money (in paying regular monthly household electrical bills or buying gas for kerosene lamps), one of the advantages of having a solar lamp in their home is that it is not subject to blackouts as an outcome of extreme weather. She added that unlike those people who are living in the city and are dependent on energy supplied by the local electric power company, they don't worry on having access to light at night during typhoon.
It is truly amazing, knowing that our project can help children like Lila and their families experience better lives with simple innovative tools such as solar lamps. It makes us more inspired to work harder. With the support of our partners in development like you, here's to hoping that we can can help more communities and families in off-grid and far flung areas.
