Providing clean solar-powered water pumping and climate-smart farming kits to 150 vulnerable smallholder families in Yemen, cutting irrigation costs and securing food production.
In rural Yemen, the combined burden of severe climate-induced droughts and unaffordable fossil fuel prices has crippled smallholder agriculture. Farmers cannot afford the diesel necessary to pump underground water, leaving fertile community lands barren. This sharp decline in local food production threatens household food security, deepens rural poverty, and limits economic opportunities for women and youth.
Green Empowerment for Development (GEFD) provides a sustainable, multi-tiered solution: 1. Converting communal agricultural water wells from diesel engines to clean, maintenance-free solar pumping systems. 2. Distributing water-saving drip irrigation kits and organic soil inputs to prevent water wastage and eliminate reliance on chemical fertilizers. 3. Conducting hands-on workshops on agroecological practices and soil regeneration. 4. Establishing a community-led Water & Resource Management Com
This project will sustainably restore agricultural livelihoods for 150 smallholder households (over 1,000 direct individuals). By eliminating recurring fuel costs, farmers retain over 60% of their operational income. Drip irrigation reduces water consumption by 35%, preserving vital groundwater reserves and building long-term community resilience against climate shocks.
