Thank you so much for your generous donation to help us purchase new soap making machines for South Sudanese, Congolese, and other adolescent African girls living in Imvepi Refugee Settlement in northern Uganda.
Soap is a basic yet essential household supply. Recent cutbacks in relief, including household items like soap, are making life much harder for forcibly displaced and traumatized young people living on the margins within the settlement. Basic hygiene is essential in refugee contexts to help keep our students and their children safe and healthy. Soap making also offers them an avenue to produce income, helping to reduce the threat of sexual exploitation. That’s why we believe so strongly in our soap making programs!
Soap making training sessions continued at our Imvepi Girl Empowerment Centers (GECs) in the past quarter, with 23 total liquid- and bar-soap making sessions being held at our four GECs from July through September 2023. We have two machines to serve these GECs, but we still need six more to serve the needs of all 175 of our students in the settlement. While we have received few donations so far, we look forward to making more people aware of this little-thought-of but critical hygiene need as we start the new year!
