Despite the delays and interruption caused to our programme by Covid and Kenya's elections, compounded by the contested results, we are on course for this year's youths to take their final exams and graduate this November.
We had a professional independent evaluation undertaken a few months ago and were thrilled by the positive encouragement this gave us. Our beneficiaries, apprenticeship trainers and lecturers alike all gave glowing reports and feedback and this bespoke programme, combining apprenticeship/workshop training with block release periods of vocational college lectures seems to be working incredibly well.
Our youths largely come from street connected and/or impoverished backgrounds and would never be able to afford their training courses under other circumstances. They have often not managed to complete primary and/or secondary level education and this is taken into account in the specially designed curricula for the courses which encompass subjects such as hairdressing, tailoring, electrical work, plumbing etc. Theory coupled with 'on the job' training is combined with lifeskills training, mentoring and counselling. All elements are needed for successful outcome and we are delighted that monitoring of previous beneficiaries discloses that they are either working for someone or self employed and supporting themselves.
Participants receive tools to enable them to start work in their chosen trades and we maintain contact with them to ensure they have maximum support and encouragement to do well.
We look forward to our next report posting graduation pictures of our proud youths!
