Esther is a young mom who has had her first baby just a year ago. And Brian (9) is the eldest son of another teen mom. Up to now, people like them faced a very practical issue: we only had the kitchen building and a few small structures (mostly storage) to provide shade/cover.
In the dry season, temperatures can jump to 36 degrees Celsius (100+ degrees Fahrenheit), and when it rains, it rains hard!
So, Esther and the other women had to harvest, sort and clean crops without much shade cover. And when it rained, they would have to carry all their goods under a tarp or to temporary cover to prevent it from rotting.
Likewise, Brian and the other kids would have little space to do their homework from the sponsor program, and too much sun could risk dizziness and fainting through sun stroke.
Now, our people can breath a sigh of relief: we have added a simple roofed structure out of eucalyptus poles near the fields. This provides more than just one benefit:
And that last point is within reach now, as well:
Thanks to a generous donation of the "Charity Night" event by the "Round Table Speyer", we also now have the funds to build a secure gate and solar panels. The solar panels will provide electricity for our sewing machines and charging phones or other equipment. We will have the panels constructed by SolarNow Uganda, who have high ratings and credibility. We are glad to partner with them for this project.
And finally, the addition of a gate will secure the road up to our property, so vehicles cannot enter without permission to steal our crops.
Each addition adds to the security and effectiveness of our center.
