When I read, I go to wonderland
Nisha, 13 years old, is one of four siblings whose mother sought shelter assistance from WAO in 2014. Nisha's mother is a survivor of domestic violence, whereas Nisha and her sisters suffered sexual abuse at the hands of their father. Nisha and her siblings stayed with their mother in our shelter for approximately three to four months. During their stay, the family received assistance in obtaining police and legal assistance as well as psychosocial interventions by our social workers and service providers.
When Nisha's mother decided to leave the shelter to gain financial freedom, she was offered our extended service of placing her children in our Child Care Centre (CCC). In our CCC, we emphasize the importance of building resilience through education, psychosocial interventions, and play. Therefore, we ensure that the children have access to education and therapeutic play sessions (Play Therapy). We also encourage social activities which are conducted weekly by volunteers for the children.
Initially, Nisha and her siblings displayed behavioural problems and required anger management sessions for the trauma that they had been exposed to. However, within two months of attending Play Therapy sessions and meeting their mother on a weekly basis, she and her siblings' well-being improved significantly.
Nisha showed great passion in learning English and to excel in her studies. With the help of her teachers in school, as well as tuition teachers and volunteers, she learnt to read well and mastered her vocabulary skills in English. She started reading books like 'Pride and Prejudice' by Jane Austen and 'Little Women' by Louisa May Alcott during her free time at the Child Care Centre.
She told the Child Care Centre Manager that her dream was to become a doctor someday. Nisha sat for her UPSR examinations in 2016. She received excellent results that enabled her to be enrolled in a prestigious boarding school to continue her studies. In January 2017, she left the Child Care Centre to stay in the boarding school, and to pursue her dreams of becoming a doctor.
