In 1991 WAO opened a Child Care Centre (CCC), the first of its kind in this country, a support facility for single mothers who have survived domestic violence that not only empowers the mothers but the children who are themselves survivors. It is a transition home for the children of our clients who had previously sought shelter at WAO Refuge. The children may have witnessed domestic violence or have been the victim of the violence themselves. CCC serves as a safe and supportive home for the children, to give the survivor mother the time and space to rebuild her life, secure a stable job, obtain some savings, and eventually have a home so that she can live with her children as a family.
Fire incident
On Sunday 13 November 2016, our Child Care Centre which was located in Petaling Jaya, Selangor was severely damaged by fire. A lightning strike hit the building in a freak event and caused extensive damage. All staff and our 13 child residents were quickly evacuated and none were injured. However, they lost most of their belongings and the house is no longer liveable.
We were very fortunate to be within a community that is warm and generous. After hearing our plight, many individuals immediately came forward to offer assistance either by providing necessities like food and clothes or giving financial help. The community showed us so much kindness and we are deeply appreciative of the support.
A new home
Our immediate need to find a suitable alternative accommodation was met when we identified a new home for the children. The home is a temporary measure while we rebuild our damaged house.
It is very important that we normalise the children’s lives as soon as possible. They have just lost their home in a traumatic fire incident and will need time and space to recover. As of now, these 13 children who are between the age of 3 and 17 are housed in our shelter for women. They are very keen to get their lives back on track and look forward to things as simple as getting much needed rest on their own beds.
Please send warm wishes to the children and the child minders. WAO remains committed to continue providing our services to women and children surviving violence. We expect to be back in full operations very soon and look forward to continuing our important and impactful work for women, children and our communities.
