Nestled within the heart of the Eastern Cape, the Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre (WRC) stands as a sanctuary of hope for South Africa's injured, orphaned, and displaced wild animals. Every day, victims of poaching, poisoning, habitat loss, and captivity arrive in need of expert care. Guided by a team of skilled veterinarians and passionate conservationists, the WRC provides world-class, species-specific rehabilitation that prioritizes natural behaviour and minimal human interference.
Wildlife across the Eastern Cape faces relentless threats, from poaching and poisoning to habitat loss and electrocution on powerlines. Many animals are injured, orphaned, or even kept illegally as pets. Without intervention, these creatures would never return to the wild, further destabilizing fragile ecosystems already under immense human pressure.
At Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, we rescue, treat, and release wild animals with the care of highly qualified veterinarians and dedicated staff. Our species-specific enclosures are designed to stimulate natural behaviors and prevent habituation, ensuring each animal's best chance of survival after release. Through ecotourism, education, and conservation partnerships, we inspire communities to protect wildlife and preserve biodiversity.
By restoring injured and orphaned wildlife to the wild, we strengthen local ecosystems, protect endangered species, and nurture community pride in conservation. Our model of ethical, hands-off rehabilitation sets a new standard for responsible wildlife care in South Africa, creating a legacy of coexistence, education, and ecological balance for generations to come
