The TSC team of 15 students and 3 chaperones had a successful trip to Hyderabad, India during February 2012. We volunteered in 8 IDEX schools, spending each day teaching at the schools. It was a very positive experience for both the US and Indian students to spend time learning from each other.
We were fortunate and had 35 laptops that were donated by Synopsys, Inc from their Hyderabad office and another donor. These will be used by schools typically as portable classrooms. IDEX fellows are installing a variety of educational software for teachers to use.
For many of the Indian students, it was the first time they had used a computer. Their enthusiasm and excitement was great to witness. They learned very quickly.
Unfortunately, customs has detained another 90 computers that TSC shipped due to new rules about second hand computers being E-Waste. This decision is currently being appealed. We hope that the computers will be released so the IDEX fellows can install them in the schools so each they will have more computers for students to learn with.
It was a great learning experience for the high school students to work with the IDEX fellows and learn more about potential future opportunities for them to do global work and make positive changes around the globe.
