Progress Report 2011-2012 - an Update

Film Leadership Workshop: PVR Nest works on various issues concerning the environment and children and engages with young adolescents across India by training them on visual and performing arts and turns them into
creative ambassadors  YOUNG LEADERS of tomorrow who believe in Being the Change.

Eight of our students along with the Principal and our English teacher visited  PVR, Saket for an event organised by PVR Nest, along with CINE ART. This was an introduction to the "Film Leadership" Project 2011 - Design for Change.

The  PVR team headed by Sarika Negi and her team facilitated the program and after a brief introduction on Design for change by Ms. Nandini Sood, some interesting theme oriented  films of 2010, made by the young students of different schools were screened. Setu was one of the 23 schools shorted listed from 3000 schools across NCR to
participate in a film making workshop.

Setu has embarked on the Mission to Keep the Environment around its school Clean and Green. On 8/09/11 eight selected students of SETU along with the Principal and the teacher, Seema Bhatia, were invited to the Young
Leaders Conference - Setu being one of the 23 schools selected for the Film Making out of 3000 schools of NCR.

A workshop by the well known film Director, Mr. Vishal Bhardwaj and Mr.B.Diwaker, Professor of Film Production, on FILM MAKING PROCESS - about  story idea, production and story board etc. This was followed by on the spot scene creation by Vishalji with the children, where few students including Ajay from Setu were selected. The children were given a theme on which they had to perfoem. It was a fantastic show which was followed by a Question Answer Sessions.

The children enjoyed and learnt the very idea of art of film making on themes close to their heart and now so came the time to prove the same. The next step for them was the FILM MAKING itself which started in third week of September 2011 and the Setu children would now BE THE CHANGE...........

The final stage of the film-making process was the 5-day film-making workshop by PVR in American-Excelsior of Gurgaon, where the children of SETU interacted with the Gurgaon school students.

Finally, the children selected from SETU made a fabulous film on environment and the film made by them during the CineArt workshop was premiered on the Grand Finale of CineArt 2011 Film Leadership Project for Design for Change. At the  premier on 24th November 2011 at PVR Anupam, Saket. on 24th November Mr. Rahul Bose, the eminent actor and the chief guest. Diverse NGO heads, embassies and corporate bigwigs were present on the premier of the film to be screened in one of the PVRs in Delhi November onwards. Rahul Bose appreciated the films made by all the children and also felicitated the children. Also present on the occasion was world Billiards Champion Geet Sethi.

Teacher’s Day Celebrations:  Teacher’s day is special, every year 5th September is celebrated as Teachers' day as a mark of tribute to the contribution made by teachers to the society. We at SETU school Nithari also celebrated Teacher's Day at the school and the day started with a presentation on the achievements of Setu since inception. This was an initiative and a precious gift by founder member of SETU to all the teachers of the school. This was followed by the award ceremony, where three teachers - Kusum Sharma, Santosh Mahi and Santosh Mathpal received the teachers day awards. The children of Class 7th dressed up as Teachers took classes. All the children also gifted their favorite teachers - cards as tokens of gratitude. Teacher’s roles played by the students of the
school were very effective and children enjoyed being in their teacher’s shoes on this special day.

Environmental Workshop by Nature Foundation: On 14th Sept'2011, there was a workshop on “Environment” for the students of classes 5th, 6th and 7th. The  two hour seesion was based on how to keep environment clean, say no to plastic bags, save electricity, conserve water etc. It was more of an interactive session which involved discussions and exchanging ideas among students. Short movies were shown to them on how to protect the environment.  The workshop gave the students a new thought on environment and how each individual can contribute to keep it clean and improve our surrounding.


Teachers Workshop:  On 16th Sep'2011, Mrs  Manocha, the Team Head of DPS Shiksha Kendra, visited SETU Shiksha Jyoti Kendra and conducted a  workshop for the teachers. This workshop was attended by all the teachers of Setu. It was an interesting and informative as she explained the importance of the Activity Based Learning and on how to design and plan the syllabus and the course. For the students as well as teachers good marks should not be the motive of education. She emphasized on interactive learning rather than following the conventional ways of learning. She emphasized on developing the writing, reading, recitation, listening skills of the children.

Monsoon Mela:  On 17th Sep'2011, SETU organized a mela in the Nithari school campus. The Fiesta was named as Monsoon Mela" and it was a great success. The village crowd gathered in front of the gate of our school, and as the clock struck 12 the entire crowd was inside the school ground at our stalls -The food stalls ,the Game stalls and the Product selling stalls were all full. This was for the first time in Nithari they had a chance to visit such a colourful school mela with so much fun, the mela was also visited by many nearby schools like Sardar Patel School, B.S Memorial, Mahadev etc. SETU school children, teachers and the entire staff of SETU were the host and entertained the crowd to the best. It was an overall good effort a colourful and a wonderful day for all of us and a great learning experience for our school children.

SOF Inter School Cultural Competition: SOF ,Social Outreach Foundation ,school Noida had organised an inter school fest  from 19th Oct to 21st Oct 2011.They had organised many programs like Recitation, Drama, Bhajan, Debate , Rangoli etc. Various students from different schools like SSJK, Om Foundation, Nai Disha etc participated. Setu students also participated in almost all the fields and had won prizes as well. Chandrashekhar of Class 2nd won prize in English Recitation and Barkha of Class 5th won prize in Bhajan Solo.

Blood Donation Camp: Setu in collaboration with Rotary Club Noida organised a Blood Donation Camp on 6th October 2011 at Dell. The employees of Dell thru its over whelming support helped collect 141 units of blood. The blood donation camp was an initiative under the Setu Health Program.

Health Checkup Abha Mission: A free general health check-up camp had  been organized on 5th Nov 2011at SSJK Nithari with the help of the Principal of Sardar Patel School Mrs.Aditi and Abha Mission. The chairman of Abha Mission Mr.Avijit Guha had also accompanied her .This camp was organised specially for the students of SSJK Nithari.

The Health camp was handled by a team of Doctors  from  Prakash Hospital Dr. Gagandeep and Dr. Shradha. The children went thru a general health checkup and after the diagnose prescribed medicines accordingly by them. They also distributed gifts to the children which was reciprocated by the children by handing over handmade artifacts to the team of doctors.

SETU celebrates Children's Day:  Children from the SETU Shiksha Jyoti Kendras (SSJK) in Noida came together to celebrate Children’s Day on 13th November at the SETU Shiksha Jyoti Kendra at Village Nithari, Sector 31, Noida.
After a quiz contest conducted by Volunteers from Dell, the children also presented a Cultural show on the occasion and participated in various activities comprising of Group Dance, Group Songs, Recitation and a fancy dress show with the Theme "Rhyme n Rhythm in the Garden of Values. Apart from the children and teachers of SSJK the function was also attended by 50 volunteers from Dell along with members of the Village Community and some
distinguished Guests.  

The event concluded with Mr. Ravinder Kaul Mentor and Chief Trustee Setu announcing the Master Atul Excellence Award for the Best Performing Children  during the year 2010-2011 and distribution of  prizes to the winners of the Quiz Contest.

The Children's Day Function was organised and coordinated by the Principal SSJK Nithari along with the Kendra
Incharges of SSJK Salarpur and Alibardipur and the young teachers and facilitators of Setu.

Airtel Marathon 2011 : As in earlier years  Setu team was also present at the Airtel Marathon , It was a wonderful experience for participants who ran for Setu for the Marathon.

Teachers Workshop: The Chairman of Setu as part of the teachers training program conducted a team building exercises for the staff members. The staff members were oriented towards leadership, team building and Inter personal relationship skills thru activity based training. It was a fun-filled workshop and totally different session for all staff members who went thru such a session for the first time in their careers. This shall be a series of workshops  which shall be held every quarter to facilitate skills of the employees at Setu.

Cambridge School Children Volunteering Visit : Cambridge School Noida Children visited SSJK, Nithari  on the occasion of Diwali , 20th October 2011 for a Diya Decoration and Rangoli making Workshop. They taught our children how to decorate diyas and how to draw rangoli. They gifted the children t rangoli material like colours, glitters and stencils .

On 9th Nov 2011 the students of Cambridge School Noida held a Science Quiz at our school SSJK, Nithari. Students of Classes  3rd, 4th and 5th class participated. The questions were based on benefits of recycling the paper
and it was a great learning experience for all the children.

The Students of class 3rd, 4th, and 5th along with their teachers and one support staff of CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL Noida visited our SSJK Salarpur branch on 18th November 2011along with  the senior students and teachers of SSJK Nithari. The agenda for the visit was the CLEANING PROJECT. The entire team reached the centre and started cleaning the area by picking up all the waste thrown on the ground. Within half an hour the entire area was cleaned and beautified by planting plants around the school. The entire project was useful and was enjoyed by the students and the teachers.......

The Cambridge School children visit on 12/Dec 2012 had an exciting theme of ART and CRAFT...JEWELLERY Making. They taught our children the art of making beautiful jewellery like ear rings and necklaces with the help of coloured handmade papers. It was a learning with a difference for all Children and the participating teachers

Education trip Okhla Bird Sanctuary: Setu Shiksha Jyoti Kendra Nithari organized a trip for the students of
class 4th to 7th to Okhla Bird Sanctuary on 17th December 2011 as part of its educational trip program. All the office staffs including the chairman , teachers and the school Principal accompanied the students. A group of volunteers from DELL also joined in and assumed responsibility for guiding the students in the sanctuary. The students saw different types of birds and gathered knowledge about them. Being mid-winter various migratory birds could be seen and this enabled the students to gain knowledge about these birds.

Mr. Khatri, from Nature Care also guided the students and gave information on the different types of birds and their habitat. The students also learnt about “Nest making” there. Snacks were distributed to all students.

Salaam Namastee Noida Visit : On the occasion of Delhi celebrating its centenary year, Indian Management School and city’s very own radio station Salaam Namaste 90.4 FM had organised an inter-schools competition ‘Salam Dilli’
on 16/12/11. About 150 students from 15 colleges participated in the competition with full enthusiasm. Five of our students were invited for the same-Rishi,  Ajay, Tapas, Pintoo and Ravi of class 7th. It was overall an interesting and motivating event for the students.

Paint for Setu and Christmas Carnival at Mayoor School : As unique gesture the Students of Mayoor school got together on 9th December 2011 and held a PAINT FOR SETU competition at their school to raise funded to facilitate winter uniform for the children of Setu. Students from Class Pre Nursery to Class VIII participated in the function, while the children from the nursery wing did colouring ,the children from Class 1 to Class VIII expressed their feeling on canvass and created some wonderful paintings. Setu presented prizes to all winners and distributed sweets to the students in the Nursery Wing. The events was personally coordinated by the Principal at Mayoor School Mrs Madhok along with the teachers of Mayoor School.

On 18th December 2011, the children of Setu were invited to the Mayoor School  Christmas Carnival and twenty children form Setu spent the whole day playing games, participating in events and also managed the Setu Christmas stall put up at the carnival. These events were conducted on experimental basis as part of the Inter school Exchange program between Setu and Mayoor School Noida which shall be a fortnightly affair starting April 2012.

Setu Shiksha Jyoti Painting Competition 2012 : School Children of Noida paint to support education of their underprivileged brethrens: SETU organized The Fifth Setu Shiksha Jyoti Inter School Painting Competition on the 20th.of January 2012 at  Delhi Public School Noida.

There were over 300 students from 28 schools across Noida who participated in the competition. The purpose of the
competition was to create awareness towards the education of the underprivileged so that they could also lead a life to build a great nation. The students created painting to generate resources for the education of their underprivileged brethren.

The Competition was inaugurated by the five children Pragya from Sakham, Ritimaan from Noida Deaf Society, Deepti from Evergreen School, Anju from Durga Public School and Rujul from Lotus Valley School. 

The yearly shield for 2012 was awarded to Ryan International School of Noida and the second and the third prize went to DAV School and Delhi Public School Noida respectively.  Prizes were also awarded to individuals
in two categories.  In Category I class 5 to 7 , Rujul Dhalaria of Lotus Valley School, Noida claimed the first prize, the second went to Sakshi Somya of Delhi Public School Noida Noida and third prize went to Jasmine Bhalla of Mayoor School Noida. In category I class 8 and 9, the First prize went to  Javed Ali of Sardar Patel School Noida, The Second prize to Nitya Devga of Bal Bharti School, Noida and Third prize to Nandita Mishra of DAV School Noida. In category II Anuj Kumar from Saksham took the first prize and the second and third prize went to  Biprita Bala of SOF and Tapas from Setu Shiksha Jyoti Kendra respectively.

In additional Consolation prizes were won by Payal Mishra from Nai Disha School, Nasir from Setu , Apoorva Kumar and Sanjeev Kumar from Noida Deaf Society , Rajal Kumar from Sardar Patel School and Said from DPS Shiksha Kendra
