Sexually Abused Girls From Zimbabwe Find Hope Through Empowerment Programs

By Gillian Wilson | Project Leader

When young girls fall victim to rape and other forms of sexual abuse, it affects many or even all aspects of life.  Girl Child Network (GCN) is committed to championing the rights of these girls by giving them hope and a building block to transform their future!

GCN offers a unique model, the Girl Child Empowerment Proactive and Preventative Program, that focuses not only on providing safe shelter and healing, but it also allows these young girls to obtain an educaion and training in life-skills.

Recently launched was the Question Power Mentorship Progam.  With the new installation of broadband at the GCN offices in Vainona, girls can now receive tutorial lessons and empowerment programs via Skype.  An active member of the community, Haseena Patel, has devoted her time to conduct this program with the girls.

The program is aimed at empowering girls to become future women leaders by observing the following objectives.

  • To provide a safe open relationship in which the girls are able to confide and seek advice
  • To provide direction and guidance and develop the girls’ self-image and belief in their abilities
  • To provide the basis for the girls to have a future outlook on their lives.
  • To give them a positive influence in their lives so that through a healthy mentorship, they are able to become strong, independent women who feel able to make a difference in their world and are able to mentor others in the same way

Because of the success of the Girl Child Empowerment Proactive and Preventative Program, other empowerment models are now being launched in other parts of Zimbabwe.  Additional organizations are setting up similar models in their communities and more people have been inspired to help girls who are the most vulnerable in society.

GCN is continuing to push forth to invest in more girls programs by raising the awareness of human rights issues facing young girls, but still needs your help!

When you support the growth and empowerment of young abused girls by contributing to programs such as these, you give them a chance to aim high to achieve their full potential and allow them to live a life of freedom they so deserve!
