This report covers the story of two girls who are dedicated to stopping child marriage in their community and inspiring the other girls to continue their high school education and not to marry earlier. Bicycles gift they receive from people like you have made it possible for them to come in the front and speak up for them and the other peers.
Sangeeta (15) & Radhika (16) (name changed) are 10th graders from Technical and Vocational Secondary School, Dharapani, Dhanushadham Municipality, Ward No-9, Dhanusha, Nepal.
They both with their other friends have received a bicycle each before a couple of months ago. When I asked what difference has the bicycle made for you both: and their reply was something like this in the points (a) We have rarely missed the school thereafter (b) We have never been late for the school (c) We have time to participate in extracurricular actives held in the school and are now a member of child club and contributing our time for the club activities (d) Friends, neighbors in the village, teaches at school and even parents at home treat us differently as compared before (e) We feel nice, safe and comfortable while riding the bicycle to school!
In the school, I met Head Teacher Mr. Pradip and enquired about them and other high school girls who received bicycles before. He said the two girls have become the member of the child club after they received the bicycles in the school and are contributing their time in the club activities. The club is running campaigns against child marriage, dowry systems, and other social evils in the school catchments. As the girls do not have to walk foot for their school they have enough time to participate in club activities which they couldn't do before. Bicycles received as a gift has helped them become champions of stopping child marriage f in their community!!
