Thanks to your support, two students from Eastern High School in D.C. traveled to Malawi with buildOn last month to help build a school for the rural village of Msewa in Central Malawi.
The students traveled with a two teams of buildOn supporters from other U.S. cities, and they started their trip with a visit to one of buildOn's adult education programs in the nearby community of Jalo. The Eastern students enjoyed this side trip and mentioned that was really great for them to see another aspect of buildOn’s work and get a better understanding of the impact of literacy.
The community of Msewa was very enthusiastic, motivated and organized! In addition to breaking ground on the school and working help with the construction, students also partook in cultural workshops. Specifically, they were able to meet with the Group Village Headmen, interview a traditional healer, spend time with a women’s group, try out basket making, and hoe making! The students also had a chance to live with host families and learn more about life in rural Malawi.
The school that you are helping replace currently currently has two classrooms, two teachers, and two available grade levels in Msewa. Most importantly, there are 116 first and second grade students in the school and buildOn will work with the community to add more teachers, more grade levels and more classrooms.
We look forward to keeping you posted on the progress, but you can follow the construction through the link above.
