This project will send 50 prosthetic legs to amputees in Benin, helping them regain their mobility and independence. We will do this by rescuing high-quality prosthetic components destined for landfill, refurbishing them in our workshop, and shipping them free of charge to our partner clinic, A2D Services, in Benin. Prosthetic technology is scarce due to the unaffordability of legs, and lack of national investment and international support.
Only 1 in 10 people needing mobility devices in low- and middle-income countries receive them (WHO). In Benin, prosthetic technology remains rare, and amputees must travel across borders to access it, adding further cost to an already prohibitive price. Without access to prosthetic limbs, individuals struggle with daily tasks and finding employment, which can lead to social isolation. This project will help address the severe lack of access to affordable prosthetic care across Benin.
STAND refurbishes prosthetic limb components collected from hospitals and clinics across the UK and Europe, and provides them free of charge to prosthetic clinics, creating an affordable prosthetic solution for patients. We will refurbish and ship 50 prosthetic legs to our partner clinic, A2D Services, in Benin, where prosthetists will expertly fit and repair legs for local amputees, alongside follow-up care and maintenance.
Every $1 spent on assistive technology like prosthetic limbs delivers $9 in societal benefits (ATscale). Restored mobility means amputees can earn a living, and it also lifts the care burden on family and friends. Mobility is about more than walking again, it's about regaining independence to do the everyday things, empowering people to thrive.
