Project Report | Nov 28, 2014
Thank you Donor for helping kids with disabilities to go to School in Odisha, India.

By Sneha Mishra | Project Leader

Thank you Donors!!!

aainahas been able to raise $5173 from GlobalGiving September Campaign and $33,973 from other sources in total for the project “Send 1000 kids with disability to school “. aaina’s project aims to ensure quality inclusive education in government and other mainstream schools for 1,000 children with disabilities in rural Odisha by promoting inclusive peer groups in addition to arranging special educational aids and study materials. Thanks GlobalGiving and donors for considering this project to support.

Jagan is Back to School!!!

Jagan a 12 year enthusiastic boy with physical challenge residing in Boudh district of Odisha had discontinued schooling as peers would often mock him for his physical limitation. He was often left alone from participating in many activities in school as well. The unfriendly and apathetic environment made him leave the school. Jagan joined Mahatma Gandhi children’s club formed by aaina in his village at Boudh district . At the club, children get a platform to realize the potentialities in every child and are informed about the right of every child to live with dignity. Abilities and creativity in every child takes precedence over any physical or mental limitation. Continuous socialization and participation in different activities at the club helped Jagan slowly gain his identity and confidence. Now, not only he attends school regularly but he is also a member of School Management Committee. Teachers admire his potential and he recently received 1st prize in a drawing competition during child rights week. He is a Hero now amongst many friends purely   because of his DisAbility! Never thought Jagan can win prize too- Jagan’s neighbor shared. She further added, “We thought it is waste of time sending him School but we proved to be wrong after going through his report cards. The volunteers are truly commited”.

Strengthening of children’s clubs is one of the prominent ways for inclusive education in our project area and significant amount of funds go towards it. With your support we can facilitate many more children like Jagan to realize their potential, gain confidence, develop support structure to attend mainstream school. With the amount raised so far we have been able to : Send 300 children with disability using local transportation to go to School; Conduct Inclusive event for all 1000 children so far. Additional educational support to 70 children with visual impairment and low vision and 100 children with locomotor and learning disability were given by the volunteers in last three months helping them in coping with class room teaching.

We are going to address from the fund raised:  Provide honorarium to all 30 volunteers for implementing the project;(8months) Provide study materials to 200 children(3rd December); Conduct Capacity Building and Training for all 30 volunteers(Jan 2015),  Provide Wheel Chairs to all 20 children in need(3rd Decemeber); Provide special Aids to 20 children(by February 2015) with the funds raised so far.

We still need funds to: Pay compensation to 5 special educators; Provide special aids to 180 children with disability; to meet the administrative cost as well. Moreover, preparing the community and School to facilitate the learning process of children with disabilities in an inclusive set up requires more strategic intervention.

We are truly thankful to all the donors who have supported aaina for the cause and we shall be updating you about the project as we utilize the money and progress. We expect your continuous support and sharing of the project with your friends who you think care enough for the cause. The yearend challenge in December of global giving solicit your cooperation in extending support of the Schooling of 1000 children with disability in Odisha in India.
