A passion for farming!

Teaching SHG members how to prevent soil erosion
Teaching SHG members how to prevent soil erosion

In preparation for the coming rainy season in South Africa, the Agricultural officer of Zimele Wethu Foundation, a Sinamandla partner in KZN province, has been travelling to various communities to train SHG members involved in small scale farming. Zimele Wethu has a passion to see every household with a vegetable garden, potato or corn field. SHG members in Msinga were recently trained on how best they can prevent soil erosion in their vegetable gardens.

Mam’ Msomi*, 51 years, caring for a family of four, and Mam’ Khanyile*, 65 years, with a family of five, are members of Hlanganani SHG, formed in 2014 in Ezinketheni by Thandanani Children’s Foundation, another Sinamandla partner (* = name changed). Earlier this year they together loaned R400 ($30) to buy seeds to develop their households gardening project; they recently harvested their vegetable to sell to community members and also to use for their families. They say that since they started their garden they are no longer buying vegetables for their households and have already made over R400 (US30) profit for their households from their first harvest. They are thankful to Thandanani for starting SHGs in their community because since they have joined their group their lives have changed tremendously, economically and socially.

Many thanks for your interest in and support of Sinamandla and its work with women in SHGs. Please would you consider a donation to Sinamandla on Tuesday 29th November – it is a red letter day as The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will match up to $1 million in donations on GlobalGiving for #GivingTuesday! Matching applies at 50% for one-time donations up to $1,000; the 2016 #GivingTuesday campaign will begin November 29th at 00:00:01 EST and end at 23:59:59 EST (24 hours). Your donation will be greatly appreciated!
