Self-learning guides for a Colombian rural school

San Vicente del Caguán, known as the “Golden Gateway to the Colombian Amazon,” is the second largest municipality in the department of Caquetá, with an economy based on agriculture and cattle farming. Despite having faced many challenges due to Colombia’s armed conflict, the tourism sector is growing.

In its rural area, the multigrade Guayabal-La Abeja School (Guayabal-The Bee) serves 18 students from preschool to fifth grade. Like many rural schools in Colombia, it lacks high-quality, age-appropriate learning resources, which are essential for developing foundational skills and promoting independent learning. This gap contributes to ongoing educational inequality and poverty.

Thanks to the funds received and additional resources -and following the needs identified by teacher David Enrique Barrios-, we have scheduled for next week (the last week of September 2025) the delivery of a complete set of self-paced Learning Guides from preschool through fifth grade (38 titles), plus a set of second-grade guides covering language, math, science, social studies, technology, and ethics.

These educational materials are based on the Escuela Nueva Activa (ENA) methodology, which effectively promotes cooperative, participatory, active learning while building social and emotional skills and fostering critical thinking, creativity, and essential 21st-century skills.
