Breaking a wooden board with their fist is not something that most Indian girls see as part of their self-image.
Experiencing this firsthand is important because it helps girls recognize early on that they can make a difference, that a female body can develop strength just like a male body, and that with self-confidence, courage, and determination, they can stand up for themselves whenever they face injustice.
Our baseline study found that fewer than 20% of women and girls are aware of, or willing to use, support systems against violence, such as helplines, the police, and community networks. Violence often goes unreported due to fear, stigma, and a lack of information. In addition, only around 15% of participants have a basic awareness of legal rights and gender equality. This highlights a limited understanding of how to report violence or take action against it.

The implementation of self-defence training programmes for girls in schools and communities is a highly effective measure to prevent violence, increase awareness of legal rights, and encourage the reporting of injustice.
The insights and experiences gained during the training can be life-changing. They help girls break free from restrictive societal expectations and empower them to lead self-determined lives.
