Session on Bone Health

Dear friends of IDEA,

Season’s greetings and Merry Christmas! Thank you for being a guardian angel for many people in need. May your Christmas sparkle with moments of joy, laughter, and goodwill.

This year is ending with mixed feelings. We stand firmly in solidarity with the people who lost their near and dear ones in the second wave of Corona. We could reach out to some of them and extend our help in whichever we can. This unpredictable time warns us to be cautious as the pandemic has underlined the importance of healthy and sustainable lifestyle.

This is especially true for the underprivileged women who feel vulnerable due to various challenges in their physical and emotional health. In many of our initiatives, we involve mothers of the child beneficiaries in various awareness sessions and activities like games as they are the primary care givers in the family, and they need a lot of support to vent out their anxieties and stress through events like festival celebrations and sports. We focus on that aspect of self-care and educate women regarding various health issues that they face. Bone health is one of them.

We recently conducted a community awareness session on Women’s Bone Health by an orthopaedic doctor for 40 women. Bone health is critical to overall health and quality of life. There are a few other things that can affect your bone health too. Different life stages unique to women such as puberty, pregnancy, breastfeeding, menopause, and ageing can affect bone density. Women are generally not aware of it and do not adjust their diet as per the need. Therefore, it is necessary to create awareness among the women.

Dr. Mangesh facilitated the session and gave information about what factors can affect women’s bone health and why women are at more risk when it comes to bone density. Bones protect our organs and anchor the muscles. Women have smaller skeletons than men, but there are only small differences when it comes to bone density. He explained the importance of regular physical activity and calcium intake through various sources from the diet.

Women asked their queries about diet and other routine to be followed and Dr. Mangesh clarified their doubts. Because of this session we also learned that checking bone density is very important. As a follow up of the session, we are planning to organize a Health Camp for bone density check-up soon.

Please continue your support for upcoming programs emerging from this project and make more women aware of the importance and ways of self-care.

Wish you a very happy and heathy new year 2022!
